JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — Although strawberry season started about a month early this year customers and farmers alike are as excited as ever to get into the fields.

Many u-pick strawberry farms across the southeast have had hit-or-miss hours this spring as they recover from a warm winter that had their berries popping up early, only to be caught in late freezes.

“They have gone through a lot with all the weather, then the freeze, the warm weather and then freeze, but they are very hearty and mighty plants,” said Michelle Pace Davis, a strawberry farmer in Clayton.
